Your main detector gets you to within a hand's width of the target. Finding it inside the plug is a separate problem, and doing that by eye means widening the hole, sifting loose soil and often scratching the find with a trowel. A pinpointer locates the object precisely inside the hole, so you dig less, damage less and move on to the next signal faster.
What to look for
Waterproofing matters more than people expect — pinpointers spend their lives being pushed into wet sand and damp soil. A retune button lets you narrow the detection field when you are closing in. A lost-alarm feature sounds after a period of inactivity, which is genuinely useful given how often pinpointers get put down and forgotten in the field.
A note on sensitivity
A very sensitive pinpointer in trashy ground will respond to every scrap of foil in the hole, which slows you down rather than speeding you up. Adjustable sensitivity is worth having so you can dial it back where the ground is dirty and open it up where it is clean.
