2 modelsStart with the ground, not the budget
The single most common buying mistake is picking a detector by price and then discovering it cannot handle the ground you have access to. In the UAE that ground falls into three broad types, and they defeat detectors in different ways. Iron-rich inland soil masks targets and needs good ground balancing. Wet salt sand near the coast is conductive and causes constant false signals unless the machine runs multiple frequencies. Dry sand and parks behave much like ordinary soil almost anywhere and are the easiest conditions to learn in.
Work out which of those three you will realistically spend most of your time on, then choose within that constraint. A mid-range machine suited to your ground will outperform an expensive one that is not.
What extra money actually buys
Moving up a range improves target separation in trashy ground, handling of mineralisation and salt, and how much control you have over the machine's behaviour. Raw depth improves too, but far less than the price difference suggests. Most of what a more expensive detector gives you is the ability to find good targets among bad ones, not to find targets deeper.
Weight is the specification people underrate. A machine you swing for four hours is a different object from one you lift in a shop, and hunting longer finds more than any feature on the box.
Accessories that are not optional
A pinpointer pays for itself in the first week by cutting recovery time and reducing damage to finds. A digging tool suited to your ground matters more than most people expect — what works in soft sand is useless in compacted soil. Headphones make marginal signals audible that a speaker loses to wind and background noise. Budget for these alongside the detector rather than after it.
