Wet salt sand is conductive, and a single-frequency detector reads that conductivity as a continuous target. The result is constant falsing that makes the machine unusable. Multi-frequency detectors transmit several frequencies at once and use the difference between the responses to separate the salt signal from real metal — which is why multi-frequency is close to essential for beach work here.
Waterproof ratings are not all equal
There is a large gap between a machine that tolerates rain, one that can be submerged to a metre or two, and one rated for actual diving. Check the specific rating for the model you are considering, and check whether it covers the control box or only the coil. Assuming a coil rating applies to the whole machine is an expensive mistake.
Dry sand, wet sand and the surf line
These are three different hunting environments. Dry sand above the tide line behaves almost like normal soil and is the easiest place to start. Wet sand needs the salt handling described above. The surf line adds moving water and shifting ground, and is where waterproofing and a good harness earn their keep. Rinse any machine with fresh water after a salt session, every time.
